The purpose of Gresham Middle Physical Education is to guide students in the process of becoming physically active for a lifetime.
We are beginning our sixth year as a SPARK school (Sports,Play,& Active Recreation for Kids)."The focus of SPARK is the development of healthy lifestyles, motor skills and movement knowledge, and social and personal skills." This program supports and enhances our present physical education program by providing new ideas, materials, and equipment.
Our primary goal is to help middle school kids become aware of their personal health and fitness and to learn how to maintain a healthy lifestyle. We do this by teaching them different warm ups each day that prepare them for their fitness test.
We give them a pre fitness test and a post test to evaluate their improvements. After they record it in their own portfolio, they graph their scores comparing their results to the Fitness Gram and the Presidential fitness test. This way they can judge their own fitness level. They are tested on upper body strength (push ups), ab endurance (sit ups), flexibility (sit and reach) and cardiovascular fitness (mile walk/run)
Physical activity logs, food logs, and beverage logs are required during the 9 week period. To ensure our students are staying active and are in a safe heart rate zone, we are introducing Polar Heart monitors (7th gd. and 6th gd.) so the individual students can gage their own heart rate throughout our activities.
A fitness class is offered in the mornings before school called "The Body Shop" as well as "The Mighty Milers".
This offers the opportunity for students to participate in physical activity over and beyond their P.E. class. (see clubs).
Heart Rate Monitoring
Polar heart rate monitors show your students the effect of any exercise on their body. This means you can objectively assess students of all abilities while safely motivating them with instant feedback on their activity.
The Polar Heart Rate Monitor
Exercising in the right heart rate zone
While heart rate monitors help your students find their personal exercise intensity, they also tell them what zone they should be exercising in for optimum results. Target heart rates and heart rate zones are calculated as percentages of the maximum heart rate (HRmax) and are displayed on screen to keep your students on the right track.*
